(SIDE TRIP) Nashville, step aside. Branson is becoming the place for country entertainment, especially in the realm of classic country. Nestled in a beautiful area of the Ozarks, Branson was founded by a guy named Reuben Branson, who opened a general store and post office in 1882.

WEST OF SPRINGFIELD
To follow Route 66 west from Springfield, use the Chestnut Expressway, which becomes Missouri 266 west of I-44.
At Halltown, Route 66 becomes part of today's Missouri Highway 96, a fairly high-speed two lane road busier than Highway 266 was.
Shortly after you pick up Highway 96, watch for a turn-off loop through the former settlement of Spencer, which features an original 1926 Route 66 bridge over Johnson Creek and a classic stone Phillips station that dates back to the first days of the old road.
