Side Trip: Coffeyville, KS
Kansas gets the smallest slice of Route 66, but it tends well to its 13 miles within the state. If you want to check out more of Kansas without veering too far off Route 66's path, head west from Baxter Springs on U.S. 166. You'll enjoy open skies, beautiful farmland, and tiny hamlets like Chetopa and Bartlett before – 45 miles later – arriving at Coffeyville, the largest city in southeastern Kansas.
Once there, visitors are encouraged become familiarized with the city's unique western history. Since Coffeyville is known as the city that "stopped the Dalton Gang", what better place to visit than the Dalton Defenders Museum? Peruse some mementos dating back to the city's Wild West days.
Modern day online map users, take note. Coffeyville – specifically, a point just north of Coffeyville Country Club on the northwestern outskirts of town – is the default center starting point of Google Maps. Be sure to pull over before checking your smart phone, though.
