Heading south from Riverton, the fine Kansas community of Baxter Springs makes a home along Old Route 66 – just over the Rainbow Bridge. Following the Mother Road, you can't miss downtown Baxter Springs. Once there, one of downtown's must-see attractions on the north end includes a refurbished Phillips 66 station, which today serves as the city's visitor center. Stop in for some local history and Route 66 memorabilia.
Still in downtown, near the intersection of Route 66 and 12th Street, the Route 66 Soda Fountain neon sign calls out from the side of the road. Be sure to grab a snapshot – while parked of course.
Then, check out the building across the street. Built as a bank in 1870, but now serving its customers in a different way, Mike's Café on the Route is a great choice for any hungry traveler. Just ask TV star Guy Fieri, as he featured the restaurant on his "Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives", television program.
