With the Capital City metro area in the rearview mirror, we push on along our tour of Route 66 to Virden. This means we're technically entering the beginnings of the St. Louis metropolitan area in western Illinois.
A former coal-mining town, Virden is known historically for the 1898 Battle of Virden (an infamous coal miners' strike) and Mary Harris "Mother" Jones.
Today, Virden is a quaint little American city offering a Visitors Center to travelers of Historic Route 66. V-town offers tons of town-centric events like the City Wide Garage Sale and the annual Virden Trivia Night, plus holiday events like the VACC Easter Egg Hunt, Virden Trunk or Treat, and Virden Country Christmas.
