We've made it to Capital City, USA! Not only the "Home of President Abraham Lincoln" but also the capital of Illinois, Springfield practically showers its visitors in attractions – especially if you ride into town on Route 66.
The must-sees in Springfield range from the obviously important to the fantastically obscure. Your first stops include the Old State Capitol State Historic Site, and the following Lincoln-heavy sites: Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library & Museum, Lincoln Tomb State Historic Site, and the Lincoln-Herndon Law Offices State Historic Site.
For you fans of the National Park Service, Springfield is also home to one of the few National Park sites in Illinois: the Lincoln Home National Historic Site. Get a park cancellation stamp (if you're in to that sort of thing), take a tour, and grab some gifts from the bookstore.
Now, since this is a tour of Route 66, we’ll have to stop at some of the fabulously weird roadside attractions. Check out the Departure Point Of The Donner Party, the Pink Elephant at Bunn Park Golf Course, the Cozy Dog Drive In (or Birthplace of Hot Dog on a Stick), and something at Oak Ridge Cemetery called the Defiant Tomb Of Mr. Accordion.
