The Bloomington-Normal metropolitan area combines the central Illinois cities of Bloomington and Normal (who would have guessed it?). The Bloomington-Normal area is one of the larger hosts along our Illinois tour of Route 66.
Normal ¬– home to Illinois State University amongst other things – features a Route 66 Wayside Exhibit at Sprague's Super Service: a Bavarian-looking historic gas station found on the National Register of Historic Places.
Normal is ideal for sports fan, those looking to shop, traveling families, and anyone who just wants to get out of the car at this point. Kids love the Children's Discovery Museum and the Illinois State University Planetarium, while others can catch a film and a photo at the classic Normal Theater – also found on the NRHP.
Bloomington, set just south of Normal, has plenty to offer the weary (or probably super psyched) traveler as well. If you have a full day ahead of you, you've got your choice of golf, shopping, historic sites, parks, and more than we can name here.
Enjoy the Grady's Family Fun Park, Miller Park Zoo, the Prairie Aviation Museum, and so much more. Just be sure to reach the Route 66 Wayside Exhibit at the McLean County Museum of History.
